Background:
Pinsent Masons South Africa has named Kieran Whyte as a partner in Johannesburg. He previously led Baker McKenzie’s energy, mining, and infrastructure team for 11 years.
With over 40 years of experience, Whyte has guided clients through all stages of their projects. He has worked on power, oil and gas, renewable energy, coal, gas, and green hydrogen projects, as well as water, rail, roads, and other infrastructure projects across Africa.
Whyte’s work focuses on preparing and negotiating public-private partnership (PPP) agreements, concession deals, and construction contracts. He also advises on project acquisitions, due diligence, and procurement. Throughout his career, he has supported contractors, lenders, project sponsors, and developers on both new (greenfield) and existing (brownfield) projects.
He has played a key role in several major South African projects, including the government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement (REIPP) program, gas-to-power and hybrid energy projects, off-grid renewable energy schemes, and large industrial plant developments.
Before joining Baker McKenzie, Whyte served as national head of the projects and infrastructure practice at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr for seven years and previously led project teams at ENS. He also held the position of group legal adviser at Eskom Holdings SOC Limited.
Junaid Banoobhai, head of Pinsent Masons South Africa’s Johannesburg office, said: “Kieran’s appointment is a significant addition to our partnership. His sector expertise, leadership experience, and long-standing involvement in landmark projects across South Africa and the continent align strongly with our strategic focus on infrastructure-led growth, energy transition, and sustainable development.”
With Whyte’s arrival, Pinsent Masons is set to further strengthen its presence in key sectors across South Africa and Africa, supporting clients on some of the region’s most complex and high-profile projects.
