Google has entered a new strategic partnership with Cassava Technologies to make artificial intelligence (AI) easier to access and more affordable across Africa, the world’s youngest and fastest-growing digital region.

The collaboration aims to break down two big barriers to using AI, high data costs and limited access to advanced AI tools. Under the new initiative, eligible users will be able to use the Gemini AI app without consuming their mobile data, made possible through Cassava’s extensive network of technology partners.

In addition, Google will offer a six-month free trial of its Google AI Plus plan, giving users free access to its most powerful AI models and productivity tools.

The partnership focuses on transforming education. Both companies want to create an AI-powered learning environment where students, teachers, and parents can work together and learn in more interactive ways. Using Gemini, students can explore complex subjects, learn coding, and work on creative projects without worrying about data usage.

The Google AI Plus plan further supports education through features like NotebookLM, which converts textbooks into interactive study guides; Gemini in Google Docs, which assists with writing assignments; and Google Flow, which helps students develop creative stories. The plan also offers 200GB of cloud storage for smooth collaboration.

According to Google and Cassava, this partnership reflects a shared goal of democratizing AI access across Africa’s expanding digital economies. By reducing access barriers and promoting digital literacy, the Gemini–Cassava collaboration seeks to empower Africa’s youth, who are already shaping global culture through innovation, music, and art, to learn, build, and create with AI.
